For my Nietzschean, First Daughter Jalaine Katavaya I mostly borrowed from another costume, and added the bracers and bone blades. I was originally going to make the blades from molded latex. I wanted something that would be rigid enough to hold it's shape, but not so brittle that it might shatter if I hit it on something. I created the form, around which I was going to form the latex, out of Fimo modeling putty. After baking it, I noticed that it was almost exactly the color and texture that I wanted. I also discovered that it was very tough. I saved a lot of time and trouble that way. The bracers themselves were made from high gloss black glove leather, dark gray pigskin and metallic silver snakeskin. They have metallic piping trim around the pigskin pieces. They are fastened at the wrists with glove snaps. Overcoming the attachment of the bone blades to the arm problem was a challenge. Since they were supposed to remain stationary if the bracer moved, I figured that I couldn't attach directly to them. After a lot of frustrating playing around with different ideas, I figured out another shortcut. I cut roughly circular holes in the bracers through which I inserted the bone blades. By cutting the holes a little small, I was able to get the blades to stay in place. To stop the bracers themselves from moving much on the arm, I essentially created an underbracer. I made a slightly smaller pattern like the body of the bracer, from wide black elastic. When worn under the main piece, they stop most of the movement. That way I don't have to worry about adhesives or having my arm hair pulled. |
